Healing Through Writing Festival + The Festival of Faith & Writing
Healing Through Writing Festival
When I was a child, writing was a way to escape my reality, to use my voice that was silenced in the other areas of my life, to practice creativity.
After I left the religious movement that silenced me, writing became a way to make sense of what had happened, to find words to explain to those on the outside. And in the process, writing helped me heal deep wounds.
Writing helped me reconnect with my core self after being dissociated and repressed. Writing helped me delve into past trauma at my own pace. Writing became a tool for my liberation.
This is why I’m so happy to share my experience as part of the Healing Through Writing Festival! This is an online festival with four days of talks, interviews, and workshops from writers and healers who can help you:
🌿 Use writing and the creative arts as a tool for healing
🌿 Tap into the wisdom of your body through writing (and discover how that’s connected to your healing)
🌿 Write about your life experiences and have your perspective (and triggers) change as a result
🌿 Source your healing from your inner life, your bodypsyche
My session is titled “Writing about and Healing from Religious Trauma and Purity Culture.”

Festival of Faith & Writing
If you haven’t signed up yet, the registration for Calvin University’s Festival of Faith & Writing is closing on March 22! This festival, here in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from April 11 through 13, is really meaningful to me as it was a space where I found room to think and grow after leaving fundamentalism.
And this year,
and I are co-facilitating a Lunch Circle called “Writers Engaging Nature and Science.” Here’s the description:By discussing creative nonfiction writers who integrate the natural world into their work, this circle will encourage participants to use nature and scientific research to inspire their own writing. One session will focus on using nature metaphors to find deeper meaning in our personal narratives; the other session will offer insights into incorporating science storytelling into braided and lyric essays, including how and where to find unique stories, how to prune and connect those stories to the rest of the piece, and how to work with a fact-checker.
Lunch Circles are a great way to have smaller conversations in the midst of a busy conference, and I’m so excited to be part of one! Click the links below to sign up for the Festival and the Lunch Circle (separate registrations).
Keep up with all my events on my website!
